FILM CLUB HAS ‘BEFORE YOUR EYES’

Ten-year old Gulistan and her younger brother Firat live happily with their parents in Diyarbakir, the heart of Turkish Kurdistan. Tragedy strikes when their mother and father are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their eyes. Traumatized and orphaned, caring for their infant sister, Gulistan and Firat soon find themselves with no money and have to learn to fend for themselves on the streets. They are befriended by Zelal, a streetwise kid who has learned survival the hard way. Gulistan meets a part-time escort, Dilara, whom she accompanies on a hotel call one day. She is shocked to discover that Dilara’s client is the murderer of her parents.

“During the civil war of the ’90s in Turkey, the Kurdish provinces were declared in a state of emergency and put under military control. Amnesty International claims that over 18,000 politically active Kurdish and Turkish citizens were killed or disappeared during that time. While countries like Argentina and Chile have faced their cruel past, Turkey still stands at a crossroads. Before Your Eyes (Min Dît)is an attempt to bring light into this dark past.” – Director Miraz Bezar

The film is free to film series subscribers, $9 for walk-ins, cash or check only. Reservations may be made in advance at tix@davidsonfilmclub.com, with payment at the door.
